Topic: Plex HTPC and MPV RIFE AI not performing as expected RTX 4090?

Plex HTPC only able to convert 4k24 at 100 mbit/s HDR to 4k48 not 4k60/72 as per this guide https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/RIFE_AI_i … 20Windows. Is this normal or should I change something or is my bit rate too high?

Re: Plex HTPC and MPV RIFE AI not performing as expected RTX 4090?

Unless it's a 4080/4090, 4K48 is about the best you can expect to get. With my 3090 I can do 4KHDR/24 x2 but not x3.

If you are living life to the fullest and DO have a 4090 in your HTPC, then maybe it is underperforming. Make sure you're not using up all your GPU power on MadVR or other expensive upscaling, try setting your media player to "maximum performance" power mode in Nvidia Control Panel, and possibly try MPV if you're currently using MPC. Those seem to be the general tips from the 31 page long RIFE thread.

Re: Plex HTPC and MPV RIFE AI not performing as expected RTX 4090?

I do have a 4090 but I'm using the Plex HTPC (which is a modified MPV player) app maybe it's chugging up resources on its own? (The SVP Control panel shows that its performance is 0.91 instead of 1.0 so I guess I'm quite close.

Edit: NVM I used basic MPV included in the install and it was showing the same performance. The App is surprisingly not the issue.

Setting the GPU to prefer maximum performance did nothing. I'm also using essentially default settings.

Maybe I should change something there or maybe install different a different interpolation algorithm, Im using the default one. I currently have this

Can you please try to set the maximum thread from additional options-processing threads. Also delete that frame height setting from the cross on the right.

You could try using the 4.4 model instead of 4.6. It is supposed to be a little lighter so you might be able to make up that 0.09. You could also try disabling HAGS (hw accelerated gpu scheduling) which has been reported to help by some people, though I think DLSS Frame Generation requires it so that would be a tradeoff.

Otherwise I'm not too sure unfortunately. The SVP community isn't that big and the number of people with your setup is possibly single digits so you might be the trail blazer here. In the big thread it also sounded like memory speed might play a role. That could be the difference if you're on a DDR4 platform. Not everyone with a 4090 in the thread reported being able to do 3x at 4K.

Could you please send link to a picture of what that’s is or elaborate further? Or are you simply talking about changing the gpu threads from 1 to 4? I’m having a hard time finding it :c

4.4 didn't help I tried that before posting here. I'll leave HAGS as a last resort coz it's gonna be a bit of a hassle dealing with it. I have 6000 mhz ram set via and XMP profile max allowable by my CPU. I'll try overclocking maybe it will make up the difference

I’ve also heard that choosing RIFE 3.8 is the fastest, can somebody confirm that it makes the difference and if so can somebody send a link to it coz I’ve been trying to find the download with no luck :c.

Edit again: Overlocking the GPU helped but not enough. I am now getting 0.93-0.96, it becomes the green 0.97-1.0 much more often now. I need a very small amount more for it to work but unfortunately I don't think I can push it much harder

Re: Plex HTPC and MPV RIFE AI not performing as expected RTX 4090?

Unfortunately, it made the situation worse so I resorted back to Auto. I tried manually setting the threads and realized that Auto probably does a very good just using the correct setting.

Disabling GPU scheduling kinda worked. It shows that it's doing 0.97-1 but it drips below that and then continues stuttering. I probably need like 2% more GPU power for it to work lol

8 threads are the best for RIFE, using all cores would slower the FPS.

you might try to downscale your 4k video to 3072 x 1728(20% lower res) or 2560*1440 with SVP options.

another option is to use RIFE V2, but it's having a degraded image bug for now. Still waiting for the fix.

picking a downscale option is the best IMO.

I tried using 8 threads but it the same performance as Auto so it looks like the Auto option is working correctly. Could you please link to where I can find the downscaling options just to check?

I couldn't find a way to set a specific resolution, only change it to HD. I think the big issue I have compared to other people is that one of my ram sticks broke so I'm running my PC with a single stick of ram and what I understood from the thread is that ram matters a lot. I'm currently running a single 6000mhz ram module with a 7700x, and getting 0.95 from the graph. I'll update when I decide to go into my pc and either fix the stick I have or add another stick.

That could be the problem, although DDR5 kind of has 2 channels built in so it was a much bigger deal with DDR4.

I haven't really tried it but this is how you would set a custom resolution to downscale to:

Open the advanced settings, where it says -12800720 put -25601440 or whatever. Personally that seems silly to me though and I'd rather do x2 at 4K than x3 at 1440p, especially if your screen is 60hz.

Yeah I tried it but ultimately decided that the quality tradeoff was not worth it. I also did find that forcing dx11va in mpv improved performance so for the people who are reading this thread later try that if you want to squeeze a little extra out of your GPU.

Re: Plex HTPC and MPV RIFE AI not performing as expected RTX 4090?

Major Update:

I installed the second ram stick and the performance skyrocketed. I have concluded that two ram stick is extremely influential to performance. Is there somewhere we can put this information out so other people won't have to go troubleshooting just like me lol

Re: Plex HTPC and MPV RIFE AI not performing as expected RTX 4090?

it's a very unusual combination - 4090 + single-channel memory
you must punish whoever made this rig big_smile

Lol I agree this is a very rare scenario. I built this rig so I guess I should punish myself lol, though to be fair the rig had 32 GB of ram at the beginning. After Windows update corrupted my computer it would not even boot into the bios so I had to force reset the bios and I couldn't find the mobo battery. What I ended up doing is removing the ram stick causing the motherboard to reset itself. I didn't notice a significant performance decrease in games so I never bothered to put the second stick until now.

While I agree that saying the Rtx 4090 should be paired with dual channel memory is stupid since nobody has that setup (on purpose at least), I do believe that saying that "dual channel and ram performance is a strong contributor to performance while running RIFE" would help quite a few people who believe that their rigs are underperforming. Especially since somebody in the RIFE thread also found a similar conclusion about ram performance
