Hi. I'm new with SVP. I'm using PotPlayer + madVR + LavFilter. And today i want to try something new. I'm waiting for Guide v6.0 released. Thank Maken1 was made a great guide like this. Hope v6.0 will be released soon.
Sorry for my bad English smile

Hi vuquanghai, thank you smile. yes I will, just testing last betas / finishing some stuffs then ready to go. by the way what do you need? make run svp only or ?

Hi all, first i have to thank again to SVP Team to keep alive this Thread, for the awesome SVP that i been using all this time, for all of you who still find some help with the guide, for my friends and the ones who contacted me by other means. Thank you all very much!.

I have in mind some updates and changes for the guide, but before that happen i want to share some interesting things like:

-Some king but not too in deep PotPlayer vs MPC HC, plus if necessary other player(s).
-Try to answer if i can the questions about " hey why PotPlayer and not MPC HC " or " hey why PotPlayer looks different or not the same as MPC HC does " or " hey why are you not using Lav Filters and Madvr " or " Why you made PotPlayer guide in SVP forum knowing that SVP Team offer MPC HC + SVP and more as recommended combo ", all of these for example and from some friends and the ones who contacted me by other means.

Part 1

I was always wondering why so many peoples complaining about PotPlayer image quality vs MPC HC image quality, its complicate to answer because there is or lets say there is two possible cases:
1- If you want to make all of us see things as it does look for you ( image quality )
2- using same settings and player from X guide as other does and it does not look the same to me

You need keep in mind and understand we all are not using same hardware, i mean if you dont know the capabilities of your monitor/tv can do with image quality, how to take advantage of them and same with your pc. Imagine someone using still an old monitor/tv vs someone using a recent one like " led " and more. Also Nvidia and AMD ATi have some settings to change the image quality of your videos if you like and keep them enable will affect the results you want or if you want to see everything as other peoples does.
You have two ways to make things look as you want or like other peoples have even if you dont have same hardware like your friends:

1-Using your hardware ( monitor/tv/video card ) or software ( internal players shaders ) to enhanced the image quality.
2-or using both that means have more patience and time dedication, i mean work with more settings.

If you ask what is the price in performance for both, well all depend thats something you must figure it out but i will try to help you with that if i can. so i could help with this:
-Using your monitor/tvs image settings will cost you " zero " performance lost to your PC, but only you will see that image quality unless someone else have same hardware you have and you share your settings with them.
-Using your Video Cards image quality by it software will cost you nothing to your CPU but you need to share your settings to others that have same video card as you have.
-Using internal shaders from your player ( PotPlayer or MPC HC ) will have price in performance to your CPU(s) and GPU(s). Same with Video Renderers and more but is the same you need to share settings with others so we all can see more or less as you see things.

The first steps to follow to start working with your ideal image quality not matter what video player are you using are:

1- Set a normal or balanced image settings in your monitor / tv like 50%/75 contrast, brightness, sharpness and 50% color.
2- Dont use or enable from your monitor / tv stuffs like Auto Dynamic contrast enhancement or something that auto change the image quality in the time the source ( video ) change. If in X scene the video source is too dark then your monitor / tv make it more brighter and more automaticaly.
3- Dont use image quality presets from your monitor / tv like: Vivid, Game, Text, Internet, etc. Always go custom dont be lazy smile read your monitor / tvs manual to can do that.
Note: I could show some examples about it with Samsung and LG monitor / tvs but later.

4- in the case with Video cards and it driver software image settings:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/5/h/u/x5hucd97qqyk8irsgz8dx_t.jpg

or you can do this:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/1/2/9/x129ceh9351hfoqv4poes_t.jpg
what is not recommended. It will affect everything your entire desktop, games and more. that + what you change in your monitor/tv image settings it could result in a total mess - oversaturated or overbright and more if you don't know what are you doing ofc.

Now this affect video player(s) only:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/k/t/w/xktwf7bruq641vdxudewy_t.jpg
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/b/d/z/xbdzg6nigbr5d3oro2qpe_t.jpg
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/4/8/j/x48jaenwzcd8z4invexi_t.jpg

If we enable " Dynamic contrast enhancement " and " Color enhancement " it will affect and work with few video players only, like Windows Media Player ( windows 7 ), Splash Pro and PowerDVD. PotPlayer and MPC HC are not affected by them but if you change their Video Renderer it could work. Here i will recommend you to use all the time and only EVR CP or MadVR as Video Renderers.

Windows Media Player + Nvidias Dynamic contrast enhancement and Color enhancement:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/1/8/k/x18kmhnc9xhmwfteuym1x_t.jpg
MPC-HC + Nvidias Dynamic contrast enhancement and Color enhancement:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/8/m/1/x8m1c3sr5301tvp3ux0ec_t.jpg
Daum PotPlayer + Nvidias Dynamic contrast enhancement and Color enhancement:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/k/l/s/xklsk65w9kk3hwpeiwh33_t.jpg

As we can see MPC-HC and Daum PotPlayer are not affected by them so its useless to keep them enable, if you do the other(s) video players will be affected only. Recommended is not use them for MPC-HC and Daum PotPlayer.
In resumen enable auto video enhancement with your monitor/tv and video card image settings at the same time following the conditions i said before may result in terrible image quality or you could make the ultimate image quality settings smile, who knows its up to you just remember the conditions about if you want to be the only one to see them or for share with everyone else.

Part 2

In this part i want to share some video player vs video player results in some cases to see if i can help you to know what video player to choise.

I will skip same settings with EVR CP, the performance is better with EVR CP but im just testing more with MadVR because it popularity. Between Nvidia Cuda Video Decoder vs DXVA2 copy-back, its up to user what to take, as you can see Nvidia Cuda lower some CPU usage but increase GPU usage, this is ok if you want to use more settings in SVP that depend more of CPU. DXVA2 we can say its more balanced, problem is that MadVR is GPU hungry, it can easy make cry any video card with high settings and if you left low performance on your GPU(s) it will cause problems of performance with SVP but in this case if you have good CPU then you can make your CPU(s) dealing SVP, in my opinion best results are keep CPU + GPU acceleration = best performance / results for SVP than use CPU only. Again i want to say MadVR is amazing, but i only see it good use for SD material and DVDs, i prefer go better for 1080p material with high quality, in this case for 1080p use EVR CP better then you will have more free room to play with SVP settings and more. MadVR + SD material = decent performance and high quality than any other video renderer could offer you.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Part 3

This part will be more like MPC-HC + it internal Lav filters + MadVR + ReClock + DXVA2/Nvidia Cuda vs Daum PotPlayer + Lav filters + MadVR + ReClock + DXVA2/Nvidia Cuda. Both with default and custom MadVR settings.

MPC-HC + MadVR default settings + DXVA2 (copy-back):
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/c/s/k/xcskbtvhx0yqb7qd0gm_t.jpg
Daum PotPlayer + MadVR default settings + DXVA2 (copy-back):

Custom MadVR quality settings:

Daum PotPlayer + DXVA2 (copy-back):

MPC-HC + NVIDIA CUVID:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/n/j/g/xnjgv4nkbrymkewe3zd_t.jpg
Daum PotPlayer + NVIDIA CUVID:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/7/3/q/x73q1wonsbv93a9p839_t.jpg

MadVR settings:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/o/j/z/xojzlnkpil5fhg9c5edv_t.jpg http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/k/t/g/xktge5d0r9upvzxmiudc1_t.jpg http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/3/6/3/x3631jc3nktqdq1v2lm04_t.jpg http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/e/s/c/xescvf0taitixj133l77z_t.jpg http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/6/e/1/x6e1rgz1tcl4cg838jqli_t.jpg http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/o/g/d/xogd5r3j3zliq92egdfle_t.jpg

If you use more " taps " in some " custom pixel shader codes ", it will increase much more the GPU(s) usage and when its too high you will have framedrops and more, we dont want that because you wont left any decent performance for SVP when its active. If that happen you are forced to lower settings.
Example:
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/1/9/s/x19s0s4bu9t05ashv1y1_t.jpg
That without SVP in use... no no no good we dont want that happen right?. Think before change settings.

Part 4

720p, 1080p, MadVR and EVR CP.

I usually play high quality encoded material, it can be 720p and 1080p but in my case i go more for 1080p if possible, when i dont have more options then 720p. If the file to play does not have any noticeable banding artifacts and more, then no need to use shaders to minimize what is not present or not noticeable. I go for EVR CP as video renderer for high quality 1080p,720p material and performance but when the case is that 1080p or 720p or less file does not have much quality like some animes, dvds, tv shows, sd movies, video clips, etc then is when i go for MadVR, you start using it custom pixel shader codes to increase quality, reduce artifacts and more. There is some settings that dont need to keep always in use, just when its needed you do, for example i like from MadVR this " artifact removal " in cases like this:

MadVR > artifact removal > reduce banding artifacts = disabled
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/o/1/z/xo1zec9r36xr0f6vthbq_t.jpg
MadVR > artifact removal > reduce banding artifacts = enabled
http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/g/z/k/xgzkw7qzqio0z9e5eq2d_t.jpg

it was simple example, it can be better and there is more shaders to make better and fix things. Like i said i dont use it when its not need and when to say when its needed its up to you. Its the same for others shaders.
Im thinking add to my guide the use of both video renderers as optional like say go for EVR CP for performance, high quality encoded material,as default video renderer and go for MadVR for high quality results with sd material, high quality encoded material too, as default video renderer but it will increase GPU usage depending what settings are in use.

---Impportant----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The hardware used for all tests was old Dual Core + old GPU(s) but well overclocked!. This is best way to see how good is their performance with such hardware so the ones with better hardware could have an idea of how much it will cost in performance for them, but dont be fool not because you have or think you have " monster " PC and go crazy with high settings in MadVR and SVP, does not mean it wont make cry your CPU(s) and GPU(s).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

more coming later.

hi all, good news I have internet again..but slow sad , better that than nothing right? time to work more on this now.

Hi all, I hope all of you are ok. coming nice updates soon...

for or as optional:

-Optional MadVR + PotPlayer for SD and full hd material but it still recommend it more for SD + settings for enhanced quality ( anything less than 1080p and low encoded quality ).
-Use of EVR CP as standard video renderer for high quality " encoded " material for extra performance for SVP.
-LavFilters
-ReClock
-my recommended settings for Creative Sound Blaster Z series and old ones ( old console launcher ) for extreme sound quality. Including for 2.1 and 5.1 speakers.
-finally recommended settings to star using SVP.

But before that happen I will share all my results of somethings I was testing and thanks to that my guide will be changed. Something like PotPlayer vs MPC-HC both including LavFilters, MadVR, ReClock, different video decoders / hardware acceleration ( Lav vid decoder, potplayers vid decoder,DXVA2,copy-back,CUVID ). I could even make some guide for MPC-HC but I don't know lets see, there is not much to change compared with popular guides about it you can find anywhere.

Oh! I almost forget to say the most important Thank to all of you who used my guide and to SVP Team to keep it alive after all this years, thanks

Hi, im glad you like it, thanks.
for me all looks very nice with potplayer, im sharpening using nvidias control panel then video and in potplayer using the PS 2.0 Bicubic A= 1.0. EVR C as video renderer. I just use madvr for anything bellow 1080p, for normal 1080p just EVR C.

Toying with Creative Sound Blaster Z series with some settings for best experience, later ill share and same for older ones that use normal control panel.

take care all

sorry for the late reply,
thx for the info it was very helpfull.
which potplayer are u currently using? and what update?
and if i use lav video decoder i cant use any subtitles any more.
Vobsub nor Ffdshow
i can use potplayer subtitle but it keeps flickiring for some reason and its very annoying me
i use Madvr because its better imge quality, could u give me any advice how to set up Madvr settings for using with svp
also sorry for my bad english smile

and ty for the guide!  hope there will be an update soon! neutral  cool

hi , how you been? hmm can you provide a simple and short test file to test what are you trying to play..see if it subtitles are not showing for me too cos mine potplayer runs just fine.
Im using last beta.
About MadVr yes it provider better quality in some way but its expensive I mean for the gpu(s). I don't use it much only for some cases or files. About share settings its something for later or I was thinking to add to my Guide to give other option. Im living in other city you know, need to get back some services I was using before but it takes sometime, I hope less than I thought smile.

Hello Maken, thank you very much much for the guide. I wasn't able to set it up to play optimally as I didn't know which settings to touch but your guide really helped me out a lot.

That said this might be off-topic but I have a question regarding to audio settings in potplayer.
Currently, I'm using a headphone via USB DAC with LAV Audio Decoder for watching videos on Potplayer though there are some settings in "audio" tab where I just don't know if I need to adjust them or not. Here is the screenshot of my current audio settings in potplayer:
http://i.imgur.com/b9ZX8UN.jpg
I also turned on normalizer to boost the sound level:
http://i.imgur.com/xq24U0p.jpg

My question is, do I need to turn on/tick settings under "reverb settings"? I'm not quite sure how these settings work and a little google search confuses me as I'm not sure if I need to turn them on or not.

Once again, thanks for the help.

Hi so so sorry for the late answer, im living in other city now and don't have internet yet but I use friends internet now to be updated with this. I want to know if you fix your problem or still ?

Slim

Hi, no problem smile and the use of Lav is optional, its up to you.

I can play almost anything with this settings, except 3d because I don't have 3d tv/monitor but a friend told me it work for him with both cases, w/o lav. Also performance is great with old hardware and with new hardware its just cake.

i got the latest drivers of nvidia & latest pot player

could u help me out?

Hi, how are you?  no problem, thanks to you too smile.

Okey about " artifacts " its normal don't worry, you cant how to say eliminate artifacts at 100% with max smoothness yet.. but you can do some manual settings to make some kind of balancing between decent smooth quality / artifacts. If its your first time using SVP and watching stuffs with smoothness you are not used to it, in time you will get used to it, it happened to me for first time and today it does not bother me much as before.
When you install SVP it auto detect your hardware and set some settings depending of it. The better your hardware the settings will be high to give you best smooth quality but its costly for the system. like video games when you change it video options, more you use the better it look but more power you need to keep frames at decent rate. You have good CPU and GPU smile but first before use SVP you have to make sure you did all my steps properly and have best results , I want to ask you when you play your full hd 1080p movies without SVP how is your CPU and GPU usage? it must be low because your hardware is powerful enough, if you have very high cpu and gpu usage using Daum PotPlayer + my settings without SVP then something wrong is happening there, like you could have some process in background all the time using your CPU or some settings were not set properly.

Check the previous post before this one, look the awesome performance it did with a very old hardware without SVP. You must have the same.

Here I want to show you all how good are my guide / settings working just taking all the basic settings, no svp and somethings from extras ( refer to video only and no audio )with an old hardware giving good quality with high performance.

You peoples with 2014 pcs that are obviously more more powerful than this hardware i trust you all can do 0 to 1% CPU usage for full 720p and +5% CPU usage for full hd 1080p. As i said before NO FAKE here, all was taken while playing and nothing more running in background.

Results with SVP + decent settings and more stuffs from Extras ( not posted yet ) are still impressive, ill show you all later and at the end i hope with a video too. Still lots of work to do so step by step.

Show me and to all peoples your 1% to +5% CPU / GPU(s) usage from your 2013/2014 Hardware + my Guide.

Guide updated to 5.0 that is for the current Daum PotPlayer 1.6
Added all the basic settings you need to start using new Daum PotPlayer + SVP. Its not finished so more will be add on Extras section, keep an eye on it.

Enjoy

Hi all, at the end was testing current Daum PotPlayer, is not that bad but it needs more user manual settings to make it work properly or for your need, DXVA for example is not enable by default as previous versions did, it use more cpu, no live version, no skins just one, DXVA2 Copy-back no always work or not work and more.

No MadVr, LAV but yes ReClock will be add in my guide as optional. My settings will have high quality video and audio, balanced performance. If you still want the use of MadVr and LAV you can use the SVP Full version. MadVr is great but demanding, not recommended for slow/old cpus/old gpus. MPC HC great player but still I like more PotPlayer, I made my way to make it run good , balanced performance, high quality video and audio, easy to use.

I will updating in time my guide again to the current PotPlayer.

@orky87

Hi, you still need install AVS 2.5.8

Hi, not necessary, these versions are related to all steps of my guide. New versions of PotPlayer for now is different as you can see, it does same function but its not the same as showed on the images. I don't see great differences between PotPlayers 1.5.45955 / 1.6.47445Upd and last version in quality, etc. in fact the update 1.6.47445Upd have same filters and more as last version.

Show why you think powerdvd gives more picture quality than potplayer? show screenshot of potplayer vs powerdvd.

Madvr can improve some quality but its costly for GPU(s) if you are trying to use the best settings, besides I use it sometimes only for Dvds and SD material ( less than 720p ). Madvr improve more quality for Dvds and SD material with low quality. For 1080p and 720p for me its not necessary all the time.

About " blocky " material use ffdshows Deband and toy with it settings until you find your best or the ones you like more. Lower some the Radius and increase a little Threshold is the best for me, I used it long time ago with very low bitrate material but I don't use it anymore, no need, I only try to find now best quality material.

Slim install this versions PotPlayer1.5.45955 and PotPlayer1.6.47445Upd as I said before.

Hi all, by this date the PotPlayer 1.6.47450 (May 08, 2014) is Not compatible with my guide, I mean the way it looks and the settings / options it comes, need me to change my guide again but I wont do that yet, I will wait and see if they keep releasing more about that version then well I wont have more options that  change my guide referring to it. For now only download from here http://www.videohelp.com/tools/PotPlaye … s#download this version / update: PotPlayer1.5.45955 and PotPlayer1.6.47445Upd. Install these in that orden. Do not install PotPlayer 1.6.47450 (May 08, 2014).

Main post will be updated with this as well.

Hi, Slim thanks smile I do all I can. My guide is simple and at the same time have more stuffs to play with if you want more. Now you say that I was about to say better keep using previous official release + it last update compatible with it, because I don't know what happened :S what they did with PotPlayer? even me I don't like how it looks and how limited its I mean its more complicate for new users because you need to set up everything now, like if it were in advanced mode. Before was user friendly for everybody, new or advanced, easy steps, now no more skins you need to download them and install manualy,no more Presets :S and more. Im just waiting if they insist keeping PotPlayer as the last update then I need to change again things in my guide sad. so again better use previous PotPlayer + it last update compatible with it.

Btw I will try to download previous updates until the version is compatible with my guide and let you all know.

Hi, we cant help if you don't show more about it. First time I see that or at least it never happened to me yet.

Hi all

Main post updated.

Updates:
1- Added Extra Video Quality and Extra Audio Quality. Both are not complete yet.

Btw thanks to SVP Team for the updates for SVP, no problems with it all working just fine.

Hi all

Main post Updated

Updates:
1- Added other solution for Interlaced material.
2- Fix for 60 fps material.
3- Nvidia Cuda for Nvidia users.

@Corvus420

Hi, sorry late answer. I cant provide for now 4k support or help because my pc not powerful enough for it but even common movies and clips I watch are 1080p or 720p as minimum , but 4k? where to find ? beside im sure in size it will be very huge and bad for slow networks like mine =/.

Thank you too, im glad this helped you.

I haven't tested that yet, 4k samples. I think my pc no powerful enough for that and also idk if its possible. but if you can provide a short 4k sample to test.

hi, I vote to use Decrease grid step: Disable ( default ), this one is used with good cpus but say when and for what to use is long to explain from me. Now Ill go better for Motion vectors precision: Half pixel ( default ) all the time if your cpu can handle, if it no then try One pixel and if still you have performance drop then use Two pixels.
Keep this in mind all the time: maxed all some settings does not mean you will have all the best.. some settings don't need to be maxed.

Edit: If you post your pc specs, will make the recommendation better.

Please download it instead of watching it on the page

thanks for the clip, its too short to can test better but thanks anyway. Again keep in mind that you cant reduce 100% artifacts without sacrifice Smoothness, you have to get use to it in some point. When I started with this for first time I was not used to artifacts later after all this time now I do some, Im ok with some artifacts because I know its normal I know that if I want more smoothness there will be some in fast motions and such static logos and more on the scene will be with some artifacts.

Try this settings and see if you like:

http://img.overpic.net/thumbs/n/3/1/xn31f8fvqf61rpk4vwuc1_s.jpg

Artifacts masking helps more to reduce " artifacts " and of course depending of the scene and more. but there is a problem you lost smoothness as I told you its normal, its up to you how much you could sacrifice for one thing or for the other ( Artifacts vs Smoothness ). Toy with it and see for yourself.

btw the sample have nice image quality. I would like to try more with the one from your first imagen / post because it got more static and letters on the screen
