Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

I tried with the settings artifact supression and all those opitons to the highest but when i do that i get stuttering but no artifacts. When i downgrade the artifacts option from sharp to normal and the other ones to normal i get less stuttering and less artifacts. i was wondering i f i could possible get rid of all artifacts and the stuttering?

Hi, first i need know somethings to see if i can help you:

1- Your computer specs.
2- Are your video drivers up to date?
3-what kind of file are you trying to play that cause you the stutter you are talking about? .mkv or .mp4 or ?
4-Whats the resolution of the file(s) that cause you the stutter you are talking about?
5-Does the problem happen with all your videos?
6-How are more or less your CPU and GPU usages?
7-What are the settings of the " active " SVP profile when playing the videos that cause you stuttering?
8-What player are you using? MPC-HC or PotPlayer?
9-Are you following my guide settings or your own?

You cant eliminate artifacts at 100% for now, all you can do is somekind of balancing between artifacts and smoothness.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Hi, thanks for great instructions, huge improvements in smoothness. I have 144Hz monitor and I'm wondering, can you give any tips running 1080p for me? I have 2500k @ 4.4GHz, Nvidia 970 and 16 GB. Running 720p@144fps with these settings works fine (~60% CPU, 30-40% GPU usage), but trying to watch 1080p is struggle. I tried 72fps, but it didn't look so good, lots of stutters.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Hi jerzeppp, thanks to you too for use my Guide.

First, nice rig and monitor. Ok try this then tell me how its going for you.

1- In your 1080p SVP profile change this:

Frame interpolation mode: Uniform (max smoothness)
Target frame rate: To screen refresh rate (default)
Search radius: Average (default)
Motion vectors grid: 16 px. Average 0  .Start from it, check your cpu usage. Max i recommend if your cpu usage are less than 70%, then 12 px.
Decrease grid step: Disabled (default)  .This setting is heavy, start from Disabled. I personally keep it Disable but if you like it, test between " To small step 6-8 px " to " By two with global refinemen ". The lower or disabled this setting the more performance you get.
Motion vectors precision: One Pixel. Start from it, max recommended " Half pixel (default) ". The lower this setting the more performance you get, but it must be as minimum One pixel and Half pixel recommended.
Wide search: Strong. Start from it and recommended " Average (default) "
Artifacts maskings: Disabled (default) .Start from it, max recommended " Weak ". I personally keep it Disabled, this settings might cause what you could call " Stuttering " for so speak because it reduce artifacts but decrease smoothness, so less the smoothness you know now what happen.
If someone want to reduce " Artifacts ", toy more with " Motion vectors grid ", " Frames interpolation mode " and " Search radius ", but remember, less settings on these settings leads to less artifacts but much less smoothness, the more the settings on them, more the smoothness but also more artifacts.

You must keep CPU usage under 70% or less. 70% is fine, just if you hit 70% without madVR and want to use it... try to lower it some then. Keep CPU usages under that % as max, make sure the playback more stable, even if you have for example Steam active and some of your friends start to talking to you, same for Skype, it dont compromise the smoothness performance and playback.

2- In Lav Video Decoder > Hardware Acceleration > Hardware Decoder to use, select NVIDIA CUVID.
3- For 1080p, change madVR for EVR CP. Use madVR for anything less than 1080p ( well encoded / high quality! ) and if you want to " image doubling / upscale ). But at the end is your call smile.

Good luck friend.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Thanks for the tips.

Ok, so the problem was with madVR being too demanding. Is there any automatic way to change renderer? If potplayer recognizes that it's 1080p -> use other renderer, else use default? Not a big problem to change it by hand, but would be cool to have it automatically change it.

Also some SVP settings were demanding.. You still can keep using madVR as your fav default video decoder for all times, but you must lower your settings in SVP on 1080p profiles, in orden to compensate quality vs performance lost.

As far as i know for PotPlayer and other players..i dont know. You must change it all the time, yes it could be boring or more but, like i said you can keep it in use all the time, just lower settings in SVP 1080p profiles and also madVR in orden to make some balancing between them. The GPU is what takes more the heavy work when madVR and SVP are active.

In other hand i know something very cool you can do with madVR, but im not much expert with that, you should google it more. What i say is madVR can autoload x custom profiles with x custom settings for any kind of file you want to play, for example something like, if you want to X madVR settings auto apply for 1080p, you can name ( or if the file already is named with ) the file with " 1080p " on it, example: The Cars 1080p.mkv, then the X custom madvr profile you made for 1080p will auto load and apply just because it detected on the file the "1080p". Google madVR custom profiles for more info. With that you dont need to lower and increase again madVRs algorithms any time you play 1080p and 720p. I dont have custom profiles in madVR, i just use madVR when im about to watch Anime. When im not watching Anime, then im using EVR CP and almost all my movies are in 1080p mkv highest quality possible. I have more power free in my GPU to increase the smoothness on my SVPs profiles.

I will let you first to toy with SVP and madVR settings, so you get more familiar with them, learn more, at the end if you dont find way to make some balancing in performance between both for your 1080p materials, then i can provide you some custom settings with my own settings, you test them and see how it going.

Good luck

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Ok, thanks for the info! Very helpful.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Thanks for the new SVP, SVP Team, gonna test soon. All of you enjoy too.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Very nice new SVP, all working here just fine and performance gain, better. Also put that avisynth in players folder, working fine too " used avisynth.dll: Avisynth, 2.6.0.5 MT by SEt 2015.02.20 (CRC32:073A3318) from c:\Program Files (x86)\DAUM\PotPlayer\ "
Thanks SVP all working just fine so far here.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Just want to ask if this player is really better than MPC-HC when using SVP? what are the difference?

psycrow117 wrote:

Hi, both players are ok, friendly user, both have settings that the other dont have but are minor depending of your point of view. I did some test using both player, with same filters, same settings, same renderer, same shaders, both looked almost the same, just vary the % in usage. I use both players, but more PotPlayer. I use MPC-HC more for watch youtube + svptube, because potplayer can be buggy sometimes with it more than mpc-hc in my case. I like the +audio options/settings that PotPlayer give you, i like more potplayers interface, skin but thats minor too because you can chance mpc-hcs skins, etc. all of this are from my likes. You try both and see if you can find in these something that the other dont have that " suits " you better.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

I also have a Nvidia 970 and I choose to use DXVA over CUVID in LAV....Seems to playback nicer with no jitters or lag and enabling GPU Open CL in SVP throws all the work to the GPU.

1080p settings for 72fps, I don't like the quality though (80-90% CPU, 30% GPU)

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Havent upgraded to win10 yet, still using win8.1 pro. I have not problems so far with both players, MPC-HC and PotPlayer in win8. going to wait some then upgrade to win10 and see how it going.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Just wondering svp wiki for potplayer (https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/SVP:Daum_PotPlayer#), it has an extra step to enable DXVA. Should i enable it over DX11, or is it fine to have it off?

Thanks big_smile

If you are using Windows 10 and NVidia Cuda dont work for you, then, yes, enable it and depending of the PotPlayer version you are using, it will show you extra options to select, example: DX9+your Gpu or DX11+your GPU. Select DX11+your GPU ( windows 10 and windows 8 ) if available, otherwise select DX9+your Gpu. This improve performance lowering some your CPU usage, increasin Gpu usage but only video and it will remain idling. Example: your Gpu clocks go idle ( depending of your GPU type and power settings on it ).
If Nvidia Cuda work for you ( if you are Nvidia user ) running Win10 or Win8, then just Select Nvidia Cuda in " Video Decoder ".

Note: NVidia Cuda not work in Windows 10 and madVR enabling " Image Doubling ", if not use " image doubling " then the combo of Nvidia Cuda Decoder + madVR ( without image doubling ) work ok in Windows 10. In Windows 8 such problem not happen.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

I must say thank you for the comprehensive guide ,I have followed the instructions so far but I have a few questions :

1. When i start pot player and attempt to play a file, reclock prompts if i should enable it or not, what i find confusing is that when I select no, I still have video playing at 60hz

2. My cpu is an AMD 8 core (8120) and my video card is an Nvidia 9600 GT, I have installed MADVR and Lav filter, should I enable in LAV video settings cuvid OR DXVA(native) OR DXVA(copy-back).

3. In the built in video decoder configuration, I have built in FFMEG decoder selected, would I get better performance if I select NVIDIA cuda decoder?

4. Is the aim of this setting to get svp to have full access of the GPU and use the CPU to decode?

5. I am using svp version 4 and I dont seem to have access to this screen https://www.svp-team.com/w/images/8/8f/ … dit-en.png

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

nareshseep
1. It must be so. Read ReClock documentation.
2. Use CUVID.
3. Yes. Ffmpeg is software decoder. CUVID is hardware accelerated decoder.
4. I use GPU in all stages: decoder, motion interpolation, render. See  GPU Compatibility
5. Use SVP4 Full (purchase) and clone profile to get access to these custom settings.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Hi everyone, yes i been lost.. super busy... Now with SVP 4 Free and Full, i dont know i guess 3.1.7 will fade in short time ? i still use it, if i want the new SVP i want it more advanced features, mostly be able to edit/create my own profiles, etc as i did with previous SVPs. But you cant much with Free version, i cant get the Full version for now. Guide will be focus mostly on the player, just make the player ready for whatever SVP version you are about to use. When i be able to get Full version ( i dont know for now how much time it will take, long story, not easy to get dollars here ) then Guide will have more stuffs related to the actual SVP on that time ( SVP 4.x version(s) ). Need to change the image hoster, having troubles with minus.com lately, as you can see images are not showing correctly or not load.

I will keep things related to PotPlayer , included what it needs ( madvr, lav, etc ). Any problem with SVP 4 should be asked to SVP Team, i cant help much with SVP 4 until i get it. As soon as i can, i will re-edit everything and keep it as updated as possible, thanks for your patient, sorry to all peoples for the slowy updates ( for the ones who are still interested on this ).

sorry for bad english.

Re: MakeN PotPlayer Guide - Not Dead Yet 2021 W.I.P.

Old settings deleted.

Lets be honest..tell what player is the best is an endless fight of topics, pools and more. There is who will prefer MPC-HC, same with PotPlayer and others even VLC. I prefer have installed and configured and use them when need: PotPlayer and MPC-HC. I recommend try both and pick the one you like or keep them both for different purposes you must figure out. Testing PotPlayer and MPC-HC in terms of performance, its almost the same if both are configure with the same filters, renderers and more. so the choise is up to you. This is not about what Guide is the " best ", if mine of the one from SVP Team and keep in mind both are differents.

so with that being said, lets talk about what im thinking for the upcoming changes for real:

-i cant get svp full for now, im still using 3.1.7, Guide will be about to have PotPlayer ready for the svp of your choise.
-new performance and quality, in especial audio with dedicated sound cards like creative sound blaster z series. very recommended if you are planning to have a sound card.
-lav video decoder as another video decoder alternative, but the main will be still potplayers ones.
-madvr video renderer as another video renderer alternative for upscaling and image doubling your 720p and less anime, clips, tv shows. This for high quality but not much performance friendly. For performance then EVR CP and madvr ( without image doubling ) for anything less than 1080p so so quality encoded materials.
-another option and solution for nvidia cuda problems in windows 10 that offer almost same peformance as nvidia cuda. for windows 8.1 users, not problems with nvidia cuda and ill point what settings are for it and what settings are for win10.
-all settings based on the current versions for the filters, players, etc.
-recommended settings for creative sound blaster z series sound cards, based on what speaker configuration the user are using / allowed.
-madvr image doubling settings for so so quality / normal 720p Anime.

Talking about Nvidia Cuda, there is some things to think about it now before be bothered in keep it in use or not. Now i dont, in fact in win10 and with the actual PotPlayer, dxva2 copy back is getting better option keeping your dedicated video card at lower temps and quite, less noisy. Nvidia Cuda even if you play something that only make your gpu use 4 / 6 % of usage, your gpu clocks and memory will go at it max values all the time making your gpu more hot if you like to keep your fans at lower speed. In terms of performance, nvidia cuda decoder favor more for old cpu users, you will see good noticeable differences in old / slow dual cores and quad cores. In the past with one core 2 duo or core 2 quad having for example one gtx 560/ 570, etc. With Potplayer selecting Nvidia Cuda Decoder in PotPlayers Video Decoders options.. was giving greatly improvements in performance, reducing your cpu usages from for example 19% to 12 % or 10 %. If the case was like 9% before then after was like 4% or 2%. That happened to me much in the past with my old C2D E8500 overclocked to 4Ghz. It allowed me to use other SVP settings i could not before. But now with recent decent powerful cpus, its not completly needed because the performance gain is minimal, your cpu is powerful enought to handle more things and using nvidia cuda or not in win10 with decent cpus the performance gain is minimal , something like -2% or -3% cpu usages. Not that much and worth to keep your GPU at the end more hotter for that. Besides now you must spare all the power you can of your gpu for madvr in case you want the high image quality using demanding settings that require more gpu power. If you have a decent cpu, let your cpu take some of the load and leave more power for your gpu when combined svp + madvr image doubling. Now if you dont want keep your cpu in usage as much as possible because it temps bothers you by reasons like you dont have proper cpu cooler or so then nvidia cuda is the best solution, it will keep your cpu in less usage if this one is not that powerful but then think first before abuse madvr + svp high settings. Trading loads CPU to GPU and viceversa is up to you and must think well before change things. You must favor one and sacrifice other some or keep some balancing, all will have a cost, if you prefer win or lose things in quality, performance, temps and power usage.
