Hey guys, so I have an R9 390 GPU and it's my understanding that it should be able to handle 4k video just fine. My only problem that I'm seeing though is that it's barely being used. When I bring up my AMD performance monitor I see that it will spike in usage every so often but even then it'll only spike to about 10% usage and then go back down to 0%. I do have GPU acceleration on and am using MadVR but it seems to mostly make use of my Intel CPU, having it using 80-100% of that and really only if I set it to 44FPS, lowest performance and no artifact masking. It kind of makes the software unusable for 4k unfortunately. 1080p and below, all works well and I can run stuff up to 144fps.

Do I just have to bite the bullet and update the rest of my hardware? This is what I have at the moment:

Intel I7-6700K 4.00 GHz
16GB RAM
AMD R9 390 GPU

looking into the crystal ball: you're playing HDR video via ffdshow filter and SVP is doing "HDR colors recovering" while it's enabled
switch to Avisynth Filter (https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/Avisynth_Filter_(AVSF)) + madVR for proper HDR playback

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately, I already had Avisynth setup as shown on that writeup but didn't have madVR. I do remember having it setup previously but it was bogging my system up even more so removed it.

In any case, I tried adding MadVR while it was enabled and it's still the same issue with the colors being washed out.

EDIT: Actually, never mind! I tried it again and it appears to be working flawlessly now!

Hey guys, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to continue using SVP on my older hardware and wanting to watch 4k media so I often find myself clicking on Temporarily disable SVP but when I do so, I notice my image gets noticeably drab. Much of the image color is taken away and I'm not sure what SVP enables that isn't automatically enabled without it on. The thing is, prior to getting SVP I could have sworn the image was always brighter and looked fine. As a test, I tried using VLC and got the better looking picture so it seems like it's affecting MPC-HC only, can anyone tell me what setting might get turned off by disabling SVP?

If you look at the screenshot I took, you can see the difference in color, the top snip is the program running with svp disabled and the bottom is with it on.

denoise shader?

lol believe it or not that screenshot is actually with the denoise filter. After Mag79's suggestion I saw it listed and tried it with no so great results. Tried it in pre and post too.

Thanks, this didn't seem to work but I'll keep poking around in it. Any other suggestions though?

Also, here's an example of what the noise looks like: https://imgur.com/fsxN7sM

I'll sometimes watch some 4k movies on my 1440p monitor but there seems to be a great deal of noise or graniness. For instance I'm watching Nobody right now and it seems to be everywhere. Is there a setting I would have to check off? I'm using MPC-HC

Might as well try reducing the performance bar first.

It's already at the furthest left position, I can maybe get away with moving it over to the right one tick but no more. 1080p can go all the way to the right and give me 144fps no issues.

Hey guys, I'm running an intel 6700K @ 4.6Ghz along with a R9 390 but unfortunately when I watch movies at 1440p with 144fps my utilization goes up to 100% and things start to stutter. This is with the bar at either the highest performance or one tick away from it, it scaling my 4K video to 1440p and nothing running other than MCP-PC and SVP. I'm using the Avisynth filter and not madvr as things get worse with that on but am open to trying other settings if anyone can recommend.

Barring settings changes, would another CPU be better able to handle my demands? If so, what would you recommend?

Application settings-->additional options-->allow output in 10bit

it's probably a better solution to resize 4K down to 1440p in a real time instead of long conversion with loosing HDR data
in All settings search for "resize", set frc.frame.resize = -25601440

in this mode my old Ryzen 1700 shows 144 fps with no dropped frames while pure 4K can only reach 120 fps
and I'm talking about MPC-HC + madVR + Aviysynth Filter + disable 10-bit output (!)
https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/Avisynth_Filter_(AVSF)

but don't push madVR settings too high, keep the GPU load at reasonable level...

Thanks for the avisynth write-up, do you happen to have one for madvr to work along with it? All I keep finding is write-ups for one or the other and it seems I can't find one that will show how to set it up to work with various filters

Hey guys, I got SVP and love it, unfortunately it does seem my rig can't run my 2160p videos smoothly at 144hz so I wanted to instead convert the videos overnight or throughout the day. Due to space restrictions though, where does SVP save the files to while it's converting? Is there any way to have it use the GPU to convert or is this normally handled by the CPU unlike playback?

Also, should I be able to play at 144hz smoothly after all and maybe have my settings setup incorrectly? I'm also open to purchasing a replacement GPU as mine is a bit older, open to any recommendations, here is my current setup:

amd radeon r9 390
lg 32gk850f b
Intel quadcore I7-6700K 4.00 GHz

It looks like I resolved the issue. For anyone else stumbling upon this in the future, I ran MPC-HC once as admin. This allowed SVP to speak with it and run along with it. I then restarted my machine to see if it would stick after a fresh boot and it did, I didn't have to run as admin again.

How would I check logs?

Hey guys, I just installed SVP and it works great using VLC but I can't seem to get it to work with MPC, I've followed the instructions and can see the raw video filter listed under play-->filters but it's still not being recognized by SVP, it doesn't even detect playback as it says No active playback at the bottom of the window. This is a fresh install after having uninstalled it a couple of times trying to work this issue out, both programs have been uninstalled as well as their settings.
