Topic: RX 9070 (RDNA4) – GPU stops processing after several minutes

Hi,

I’m using SVP together with MPC-HC and madVR on an AMD RX 9070 (RDNA4). Everything works fine at first: GPU load is steady (~70–80%) and interpolation is smooth.

But after several minutes, the GPU suddenly stops working. GPU utilization drops to idle (0–3%) and all frame interpolation falls back to CPU only, which causes heavy stutter, (Ryzen 9600X )

Important details:

-There’s no driver crash, no TDR, no error in Event Viewer.

-It behaves as if I manually disabled “use GPU” in SVP.

-This happens on all drivers since RX 9070 launch

-The exact same setup works fine on RX 6800 XT, RX 6650 XT, and NVIDIA RTX 30-series.

So it looks like RDNA4 drivers drop the OpenCL context silently after a while.
Has anyone else experienced this with RX 9000 series?
Is there any workaround to force SVP to use D3D11 compute or Vulkan instead of OpenCL in the DirectShow pipeline (madVR + MPC-HC)?

Thanks in advance!

Re: RX 9070 (RDNA4) – GPU stops processing after several minutes

and what is in the SVP's log at this moment?

I'd try switching to MPCVR from madVR...

Re: RX 9070 (RDNA4) – GPU stops processing after several minutes

Nothing appears in the SVP logs.... for SVP this is completely transparent....

I start playing a video and this appears:

02:09:41.667 : Playback [d3a95f74]: playing at 164.835 [23.976 *55/8]

And even if the GPU stops working, SVP doesn't even notice, except that all the work falls on the CPU and the Ryzen 9600x isn't able to do everything on its own and the video stutters.

It's a problem with the RX9000 and its drivers... I have more GPUs at home, (RX6650XT, RX6800XT, RTX3060Ti and RX 6700XT), with all of them this doesn't happen, it's only the RX 9070, and it does this right from the launch day which was when I bought it, I've been updating the drivers to the current ones and this happens to all of them, I've already reported it to AMD to see if they do something, although I don't really believe it.

I wouldn't like to change to MPCVR, I really like MadVR+SVP, and if I don't manage to solve this before the end of the year I'll change to an nVidia and that's it, because I'm already tired of having to close MPC-HC and open it every 10-15 minutes for it to work again for another 10-15 minutes.

Regards

I mean, if it works with mpcvr then probably it somehow "crashes" under heavy load only, which probably means overheating and/or psu problems.

No no, that's not it. The GPU barely heats up. I'll leave you a screenshot.

This graphics card is very efficient, consumes very little with SVP+madVR.

The RX6800XT consumes much more and runs hotter, and it works perfectly with this same system. The power supply is new, "Corsair RMe Series RM750e 750W 80 Plus Gold"... but I also have an EVGA Spuernova 750 G2 that has also been in this system, and the same thing happened.

If I put in the RX6800XT everything works fine, but then when the computer is used for games, the RX9070 is better and consumes much less...

Anyway, I have to find a solution because what I use the computer for the most is SVP + MadVR and I'm already tired of it hahaha. I've been like this since March 12th when I got the GPU lol
