Topic: Ryzen Megathread

Will the Ryzen 8 cores 16 threads CPU perform as well as the 6900k? Let's find out together.
The Ryzen CPU has reduced shutter in gaming tests compared to the 7700k. I wish to see if MPCHC will provide a more smooth, stable experience.
The ryzen 1700 is currently @$329USD, overclocking with a $99 board, it's comparable to a 6900k. I expect the 1700 can handle heavy workload such as 4K 24->60fps playback.

Here is my upgraded build
CPU - Ryzen 1700@3.8ghz CPU
Motherboard - GA-AB350-GAMING 3    (rev. 1.0)
Ram - 2x8GB/2400/Cas15
Cooler - stock [212 Evo when bracket arrive]
GPU - Gtx 1070 Gaming G1
Monitor - D2414H 1080p, Nvidia custom res up to 1440p testing(it won't work with 4K . If anyone knows how can I achieve that it will be great)

Many reviewers complaining about low performance caused by beta/non-final UEFIs.
Especially for ASUS boards.

A high-refresh monitor with a small block size setting will easily kill a 7700k at 1080p.

I will see if there is a difference for higher speed Ram.

For the motherboard, I am still deciding since PCCG has pushed the arrival day a week back. I have cancelled the order and purchased 1700 today. Currently sitting on my desk.

Since everybody warned against Asus. I am now considering gigabyte or MSI.

why it showed intel xeon instead of ryzen?
how was your personal experience? is it good to jump?
i was thinking to change my current i7 skylake to ryzen ship soon.

My personal experience with Xeon is good. Loads are 25%(720p) to 80%(1080p) 60fps. There is micro jitters and sometimes shutters between scenes. My xeon build cannot handle 1440p nor 4k nor 144fps monitors.

I still don't have the motherboard yet so I can't say if it's a good jump. But a 270% performance comparison should be better than good. I hope to get rid of micro jitters and be more stable when jumping frames.

I wouldn't suggest you switch from an i7 skylake unless you have one of the 4k or 144fps monitors. Since i7 skylake is more than capable. Zen 2 should have improvement to clock speed since Zen is a brand new architecture.

Well, here is a summary of Ryzen:
- R7 1700 is the best bang for the buck 8-Core Multi-Work CPU (if plan OCing).
- As a Gaming CPU 8-Core Ryzen sucks but 6-Core should be the best bang for the buck with future-proof (229$ version)
- Ryzen suffers in multi memory access scenarios with much memory allocation because 8-Core consists of two 4-Core blocks which share 8MB L3 cache each. And the connection between these 8MB cache parts is real slow and becomes bottleneck in those scenarios.
- Windows and motherboard vendors still need fix Ryzen compatibility support (BIOS, core scheduler, RAM support etc).

TLDR: Should anyone "upgrade" from i7 to Ryzen for games only? Absolutely not! No way! Seriously... DON'T! But if you are a creator or have old i3/Phenom/1st Gen I-Core then yeah, just pick proper Ryzen for your needs.

I recommend you watch this review. This is very important and all the points being raised are significant. It's a myth that Ryzen is and will be bad for gaming, especially in the future, performance will only increase..

No, it's current reality. And if you want to speak about possible future then remember that all current games aside maybe few of most current and/or online ones will not have their code rebuilt when even 5 years old i5 works fine with them. Your possible future comes in 1-2 years for newest games.

Heck, even your link says you are wrong. You can wait this time buying bleeding-new CPU... or buy newer Ryzen+ or Coffee Lake when time comes if you need a gaming CPU only.

Looks like your CPU have some thermal issue, in my experience E3-1230 v2 is just capable of processing 4K video, with CPU utilization around 70%.
This is my test result.

I think it's my mobo and cheap ram cause issues. Maybe it's the player, filters, settings, rendener etc...
I will see how it goes with a fresh installed system.

It already boosts to 3.7 though. And I think those are good chips, as SiliconLottery's 3.8ghz bin has a guaranteed voltage of 1.376V:

The 1700 isn't bad though, no... But the rest are clocked very close to their voltage wall, kinda like the 7700k and the later Phenom IIs.

Looks like SVP scales very well. I can see 1700@3.7ghz is > 200% performance compared to my old 1230v2
