Topic: Seeking causes the player to crash

I am very disappointed that this issue is still not fix, seeking quickly between diff. parts of a movie causes the player to crash, not only that, but the crash is so bad that I get a black screen and nothing responds like I can pull up the task manager to kill MPC-HC but I can't see anything since everything is black so I am forced to do a hard shut down sad

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

Use avisynth 2.6

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

I had an issue just like this months ago, but the version of avisynth that comes with current versions of SVP4 no longer gives me this issue.  Maybe your avisynth is outdated or something?  Alternatively, maybe you have an old version of avisynth.dll in the same folder as mpc-hc.exe and you never deleted it?

In the past, back when SVP used an older version of avisynth, I had to use the avisynth MT DLL from the following post and put it in the same folder as mpc-hc.exe:

This is a clean install of Windows 10 x64 so obviously when I installed SVP today, it installed the latest components which included Avisynth 2.6 and the issue still happened.
any other suggestion?

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

do not seek quickly between diff. parts of a movie?

Did you try the specific avisynth MT that I linked to?

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

MPC-HC 1.7.10 and madVR 0.89.19 and ReClock 1.8.8.4 and SVP 4.0.0.54

I have this seek issue in MPC-HC now.
The avisynth dll from the linked thread is the same that came with SVP 4 Pro Avisynth MT 2.6.0.5.

When I fast seek (every second) in video forward or backward then after around 10th seek MPC freezes reproducible.

This happens only when SVP 4 is active and SVP "reset on seek" is set to soft or hard.
When SVP "reset on seek" is set to "Don't reset" then mpc does not freeze.

But when set to "Don't reset" then it takes 10 sec while I see ghost images until seek shows correct frame.

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

It doesn't crash when I use SVPFlow only. I think the effect is same as "Don't reset" like stated above.

Using Avisynth+ r1779 + ffdshow x64.

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

Are you using ReClock?  Quick seeks for me with that on can crash the player, and sometimes all of Windows too sad

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

Yes ReClock is active but with SVP disabled quick seek works without a problem.
With ReClock disabled and SVP active then quick seek freezes MPC-HC

How can I try SVP 4 with Avisynth+ ?

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

Are you using madVR? If you are, then uncheck "enable automatic fullscreen exclusive mode" (madVR settings > rendering > general settings). When I have that enable, I used to crash like almost every time when seeking or going in/out of fullscreen. But ever since I disable it, seeking and going in/out of full screen is super fast and doesn't crash. I just tried seeking forward and backward repeatedly for 20 times with my 23.976, 25, 29.97, and 50fps videos and none crash.

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

madvr fullscreen exclusive mode is disabled. Quick seek freeze happens in windowed mode. My videos have 25fps.

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

I just tried my 25fps videos. Also no crash/freeze in windowed or fullscreen mode, no matter how many seeks I did.

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

Thank you Teiji for trying to reproduce the issue.
What is your MPC-HC, madVR and SVP version?
What is your GPU?
I have AMD R9 280 with driver 15.12

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

MPC-HC 1.7.10
madVR v0.89.19
ReClock 1.8.8.5
SVP 4 Pro 4.0.0.54

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
i7 3770K 4.4Ghz
GTX 980 Ti SC+ (359.06 driver)
16GB RAM
Acer XB271HU monitor (144Hz)

Here are my SVP and other settings:

Re: Seeking causes the player to crash

OK that is pretty much the same software version and settings I use.
So as it is working for you it is not a general problem.
So my PC has something different we don't know yet which makes this problem.
I will do the seek a little slower then ;-)

Edit: Solved on my PC now by using Nvidia GTX 970 instead of AMD R9 280 and updated software

MPC-HC 1.7.10
madVR v0.90.22
ReClock 1.8.8.5
SVP 4 Pro 4.0.0.81 (avisynth+ 0.1 r1779)

Windows 7 Pro x64
i5 2500K 4.4Ghz
GTX 970 (368.22 driver)
16GB RAM
Acer XB270H monitor (144Hz)
